The rise of social media has exacerbated body image issues among girls, Parents reports, highlighting how a new Girl Scouts custom survey conducted by Wakefield Research found that 37% of girls between the ages of 5 and 13 wish they could change something about their appearance. That number jumps to 50% for girls ages 11 to 13. What’s more, 36% of girls say they hear negative messages about body image from the women in their lives. In all age groups, girls said they prefer to be called smart, funny, or creative – rather than pretty.
