In the wake of the December school shooting in Newtown, CT, gun violence and mental health have become a major topic of conversation among media, legislators and their communities.
In partnership with the Adelphi University Center for Health Innovation, Wakefield Research surveyed mental health professionals – including psychologists, psychiatrists, licensed clinical social workers – on these sensitive topics, uncovering how they would approach how mental health and gun legislation.
- Nearly two-thirds (62%) of mental health professionals believe gun law reforms are more likely to help prevent gun violence than reforming the mental healthcare system.
- Two in five mental health professionals (41%) believe their community’s mental health system is unprepared for a community disaster, such as a school shooting.
